The New York Yankees were eliminated from the playoffs in the first round once again. Immediately following this, George Steinbrenner, owner of the Yankees, believed changes had to be made starting with him. He has decided to step down and give the day to day operations to his children Hank and Hal. They seem to be inheriting a franchise with many clouds of uncertainity.
Joe Torre refused their offer following the first round exit and has recently signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Alex Rodriguez has decided to opt of of his contract and pursue the free agent market due to the uncertainty around the locker room. Jorge Posada (catcher) and Mariano Rivera (closer) are also free agents that are yet to be signed by the team.
The dynasty that was around in the 90's seems to be falling apart and no one has any idea which direction this organization is heading. They have signed ex-Yankee Joe Girardi to be manager and have a young, promising pitching staff to lead the way for next season. Many elements of their team are unknown, but everyone is waiting to see if they have what it takes to win their 27th World Series.

As much as I dislike the Yankees, I am sad to see Steinbrenner step down. He took the Yankee franchise out of the dumps in the 1970's to help them become the richest and succesful teams in baseball. I will miss him and Larry Luchinno of the Red Sox bantering about who got the best of who. It will definitely hurt the greatest rivalry in sports, the Red Sox and Yankees.
I am quite sad to see Steinbrenner go, but because of his current state of health, I believe it's for the best. I remain optimistic and have no doubts that the Yankees will bounce back and become a powerhouse in baseball and in sports once again. For now, however, both George and the team need to move forward and work on getting things back in order.
I am interested to see how the change in leadership affects the average fan's view of the Yankee organization and what marketing schemes they will come up with to promote Joe Girardi's return
All I have to say is Hank Steinbrenner is the man. He sounds just like his dad in his youth with his no-nonsense approach to running the Yankees. He got the best of Scott Boras recently (something most guys cant say they have done) and got A-Rod back for a "discount" from the $350 million that Boras wanted. If Hank and Hal Steinbrenner run the Yankees the same way George did, then it seems that the Yankees will be just fine. Based on Hank's "Does A-Rod want to go the hall of fame as a Toledo Mud Hen" comment, it seems that Larry Lucchino and Hank will have plenty of bantering over the years.
